Collagen amino acids explained: glycine, proline and 4,000 Daltons

Collagen amino acids explained: glycine, proline and 4,000 Daltons - VECHÉN

Collagen labels often bring together three different ideas: the animal source, the amino acids that make up the protein, and the size of the peptides after processing. Understanding each one makes a formula easier to compare.

Start with the amino acids

Proteins are chains of amino acids. Collagen has a distinctive composition, particularly rich in glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. In native collagen, three protein chains wind together into a triple helix.

  • Glycine is the smallest amino acid. Its position at every third residue in the repeating triple-helical sequence allows the chains to pack closely.
  • Proline has a ring-shaped structure that influences the shape of the protein chain.
  • Hydroxyproline is formed by modifying proline residues during collagen production. It helps stabilise the triple helix.

These are explanations of collagen’s molecular structure, not separate promises that taking the amino acids will improve skin or joints. Read the structural science. ↗

What hydrolysed collagen means

Hydrolysis breaks long protein chains into smaller fragments called peptides. Amino acids are the individual units; peptides are short chains of those units. Hydrolysed collagen contains a mixture of peptides rather than intact collagen fibres.

Digestion continues to break dietary proteins and peptides down. Eating collagen does not deliver intact replacement fibres straight to a chosen part of the body. Its amino-acid composition should be distinguished from evidence about a particular finished supplement. Read more about collagen hydrolysis. ↗

Why collagen is not a complete protein

A complete protein supplies all nine essential amino acids in adequate proportions. Collagen lacks tryptophan, one of those essential amino acids. Its distinctive composition therefore does not replace a varied intake of dietary protein.

Whey, eggs and soy provide complete protein. Other plant foods can contribute complementary amino-acid profiles across a varied diet. Collagen and a general protein powder should not be treated as nutritionally interchangeable simply because both are sold by the scoop. Explore complete and incomplete proteins.

What 4,000 Daltons tells you

A Dalton, abbreviated Da, is a unit of molecular mass. Four thousand Daltons is also written as 4 kDa. This number concerns molecular size; it is different from the grams of collagen in a serving.

STRUCTURA’s collagen has a stated molecular weight of 4,000 Daltons. Hydrolysed collagen contains a distribution of peptide sizes, so the figure should not be read as a claim that every peptide is identical.

A Dalton figure alone does not demonstrate better absorption, faster results or a particular clinical benefit. Those questions require evidence beyond a molecular-weight number.

Inside STRUCTURA

  • Source: skin from non-endangered fish.
  • Form: hydrolysed marine collagen peptides.
  • Stated molecular weight: 4,000 Daltons.
  • Collagen per serving: 10g in a 10.35g serving of the complete formula.
  • Other declared ingredients: 180mg vitamin C, 25mg hyaluronic acid and eight B vitamins per serving.
  • Allergen: fish.

Where vitamin C fits

Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, bones and cartilage. It participates in the enzyme reactions involved in collagen production. This is a nutritional role of vitamin C, separate from the amount or molecular weight of collagen peptides. Read the NIH vitamin C overview. ↗

Use the label to answer four questions

  1. What is the source, and is it suitable for your diet?
  2. How many grams of collagen does a serving supply?
  3. Which processing and molecular-weight details are actually specified?
  4. What else is in the formula, and in what amount?

Explore marine collagen peptides, bovine collagen peptides and vitamin C in the ingredient guide, or view the STRUCTURA formula.

Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Follow the recommended serving and the allergen information on the product label.
