Acerola
A small tropical fruit known for its vitamin C content, used as fruit powder or a standardised extract.
What it is
Acerola is a small tropical fruit often called Barbados cherry or West Indian cherry. Despite the common name, it is botanically different from the sweet and sour cherries of the genus Prunus.
Its nutritional role
Acerola is known for its naturally high vitamin C content. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient; the fruit's name alone does not tell you how much a finished preparation supplies.
Understanding the form
Fruit powder and a vitamin-C-standardised extract are different preparations. Standardisation specifies a measured proportion of a constituent, such as vitamin C, rather than making every extract equivalent to whole fruit.
A useful detail
Fruit weight, extract weight and vitamin C content are three different quantities. Compare the declared vitamin C per serving rather than assuming that a larger fruit-equivalent number means more vitamin C.
In VECHÉN
Acerola appears in our vitamin C capsules, Greens Blend and Hemp Protein + Greens. The capsule declares 125mg vitamin C; the amounts in the other blends should not be inferred from that figure.
