Which of the four proteins, and why

Which of the four proteins, and why - VECHÉN

I get asked this more than anything else, so here's my honest framework

We make four proteins. Nobody needs all four. Here's how I'd walk you to yours.

Start with your diet — it decides half of it

If you're dairy-free or fully plant-based, the whey is out and your world is pea, rice and hemp. If dairy's fine, all four are open and the question becomes texture and habit. That's it — the first fork in the road takes ten seconds.

Then ask: shaker or spoon?

This is the question people skip, and it's the one that predicts whether a tub gets finished.

If your protein moment is a shaker — after a session, on the way out the door — you want something that vanishes into liquid. That's the whey first (23g per serving, the smoothest mix we make) and the pea close behind.

If your protein moment is food — porridge, yoghurt, soup — you want hemp. It's nutty, it behaves in a bowl, and it's the one protein I genuinely cook with. Highest fibre in our range too, which shakers never tell you about.

Then: what does your palate actually want at 7am?

Be honest here, because this decides adherence more than any nutrition table.

Whey — vanilla or chocolate, cleanest canvas, drinks well with nothing but milk. The one I hand to people who "don't like protein shakes".

Pea — unflavoured, takes on whatever you blend it with. The smoothie base.

Rice — proper chocolate from real cocoa, 0.15g of sugar. The one for people who'd otherwise buy a chocolate milkshake. Carries caffeine — daytime only.

Hemp — nutty and green, tahini territory. The acquired taste that becomes the favourite.

My actual answers to the three most common cases

"I train three times a week and want one tub." Whey if dairy's fine — vanilla, because it goes in everything. Pea if not.

"I'm plant-based and serious about protein." The Plant Set — pea and rice mirror each other's amino profiles, and you'll use both more than you think.

"I want more protein but I hate shakes." Hemp, and stop shaking it. Through porridge, through Bulgarian yoghurt, into a lentil soup at the end of cooking.

  • High protein
  • Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass
  • Protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass

One thing I won't do is tell you a protein powder is the difference-maker. Your meals are. A tub earns its place by making the good week easier to repeat — that's the whole job.

Takeaways

  • Diet first: dairy-free removes half the decision instantly
  • Shaker people: whey, then pea. Spoon-and-bowl people: hemp
  • Palate decides adherence — pick the flavour you'd choose at 7am, not the one that sounds virtuous
  • Rice is the caffeinated one; keep it for daylight
