Description

A chocolate shake with plant protein, fibre and selected vitamins and minerals in the same scoop. Soy protein isolate supplies the protein, with cocoa for chocolate character and chicory root fibre contributing fibre. It is an easy way to add protein in a vegan format you can prepare in minutes.

A 25g serving provides 17.8g protein, 2.5g fibre and 93 kcal. It also provides 20.7mg vitamin C, 91.7mg magnesium and 4.1mg iron. Protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass and to the maintenance of normal bones. Cocoa and flavouring provide the chocolate profile, with stevia-derived steviol glycosides for sweetness.

Soy isolate supplies plant protein with all nine essential amino acids. Chicory root fibre contributes to the serving’s fibre and the shake’s body. The vitamin and mineral blend adds nutritional roles beyond protein: vitamin C supports normal immune function, magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, and iron contributes to normal oxygen transport and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Flavouring and stevia-derived sweetness make the powder easy to use as a regular shake.

The broader micronutrient mix has complementary roles: vitamin A helps maintain normal skin, vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, and several B vitamins contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism. Zinc helps maintain normal hair, skin and nails; iodine supports normal thyroid function. These are nutritional contributions alongside the protein, rather than a replacement for the nutrients in meals.

Mix the powder into water, juice or a plant drink, or add it to yoghurt. It is intended to supplement your food intake rather than replace a meal. The 300g tub contains 12 servings. Suitable for vegans. Contains SOY.

Which protein source is used?
Soy protein isolate.
What vitamins and minerals are included?
Vitamins A, E and C, B2, B3, folic acid and B12, with potassium, chloride, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper and iodine.
How much vitamin C, magnesium and iron are in one serving?
20.7mg vitamin C, 91.7mg magnesium and 4.1mg iron per 25g serving.
How do I mix it?
Add one scoop or three heaped teaspoons (25g) to a glass of water, juice, soya drink or another preferred liquid. Stir or blend. It can also be mixed into yoghurt or with berries.
What gives it its chocolate flavour and sweetness?
Cocoa powder and flavouring provide the chocolate profile. Steviol glycosides provide sweetness.
Is it vegan, and does it contain allergens?
It is vegan and contains SOY. The manufacturing facility also handles other allergens including milk, egg, nuts and cereals.
Is it a meal replacement, and how many servings are included?
It is a protein supplement to use alongside meals. The 300g tub provides twelve 25g servings.
Why include chicory fibre?
Chicory root fibre contributes dietary fibre and body to the shake. It makes this more than a protein-only powder: the stated fibre total is an addition to the fibre you obtain from everyday meals. The stated fibre figure is for the complete powder, not a specified dose of pure inulin.
Why add vitamins and minerals to protein?
They supply nutrients with different roles in the same serving. Protein supports muscle mass and normal bones. Vitamin C contributes to normal immune function; magnesium supports normal muscle function; and iron supports normal oxygen transport and helps reduce tiredness and fatigue. The blend makes these nutrients convenient to take together, without making a shake a replacement for varied meals.

What isolate means

Soy protein isolate is made by concentrating the protein fraction of soybeans. It differs from whole soybeans and soy flour because much of the original fat and carbohydrate has been removed.

Understanding amino acids

Soy protein supplies all nine essential amino acids. Complete describes this amino-acid profile; it does not mean the product is a complete meal or contains every nutrient a person needs.

Its nutritional role

Protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass and the maintenance of normal bones. A supplement can contribute to daily protein intake alongside meals.

In VECHÉN

Soy Protein + Multivitamins Vanilla provides 18g protein per 25g serving, while Chocolate provides 17.8g. The vitamin combinations also differ between flavours, so they should be compared individually. Both contain soy. A plant-derived ingredient does not remove the need to check allergens, and the multivitamin addition does not turn the powder into a nutritionally complete meal replacement.

How it helps

Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass, to the maintenance of muscle mass, and to the maintenance of normal bones.

Nutrients of integrity

Chicory root fibre

Root-derived fibre that also contributes to the texture of selected powders.

SourceChicory root fibre extract
FormFibre ingredient
Found inChicory, Jerusalem artichoke, onion, garlic, leek

What it is

Chicory roots contain fructans, a family of carbohydrates that includes inulin. These differ from starch: human digestive enzymes do not break them down in the same way, and they can be fermented by bacteria in the large intestine.

Its place in a formula

Chicory root fibre can add bulk and influence mouthfeel. It is a fibre ingredient, rather than a protein or a vitamin. The total fibre declaration may include contributions from several ingredients.

A useful detail

A blend’s total fibre content does not tell you its exact inulin dose. Likewise, the presence of chicory root fibre alone does not establish a particular digestive benefit. The specific ingredient and amount matter.

In VECHÉN

Chicory root fibre appears in Pea Protein, Brown Rice Protein, Soy Protein + Multivitamins and Bovine Collagen + Glucosamine. People sensitive to fermentable fibres may experience bloating, so tolerance is an individual consideration.

SourceCalcium ascorbate, ascorbic acid or sodium ascorbate depending on formula; acerola is also present in Greens Blend.
FormPowder or liquid, depending on formula
Found inCitrus, blackcurrant, peppers, broccoli, kiwi

What it is

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that your body cannot make. Peppers, kiwi fruit, citrus fruits and broccoli are familiar food sources.

Its nutritional role

Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, bones and cartilage. It is involved in the enzyme reactions used to make collagen. It also increases iron absorption; this is particularly relevant to non-haem iron found in plant foods.

Understanding the form

Ascorbic acid and mineral ascorbates, such as calcium ascorbate and sodium ascorbate, supply vitamin C. A plant-derived source does not automatically mean better absorption. Liposomal describes a formulation approach, rather than a different vitamin.

A useful detail

The percentage absorbed falls as the dose increases. A higher number on the front of a pack does not mean proportionally more vitamin C reaches the body.

In VECHÉN

STRUCTURA provides 180mg vitamin C per serving. Other formulas use different amounts and combinations; compare the vitamin C quantity per recommended serving rather than the weight of the whole powder or liquid.

Nutrients of integrity

Maltodextrin

A starch-derived carbohydrate used for bulk, carbohydrate content or as a carrier.

SourceMaltodextrin
FormPowder

What it is

Maltodextrin is made by partially breaking down starch into shorter carbohydrate chains. The source starch can vary, so its botanical source should not be guessed from the name alone.

Why it is used

In a drink powder, maltodextrin can supply carbohydrate and contribute bulk. In a smaller quantity, it can act as a carrier, helping another ingredient disperse through a blend. The same ingredient can therefore have different purposes in different recipes.

A useful detail

The carbohydrate and sugars lines in a nutrition table are not interchangeable. Maltodextrin contributes carbohydrate even though much of it is not counted in the sugars figure. A low sugars number does not mean a product contains no carbohydrate.

In VECHÉN

Electrolytes + Carbs lists maltodextrin first and provides 9.3g carbohydrate per 12g serving. Maltodextrin also appears in selected collagen and soy formulas. Ingredient order helps show its relative place in the recipe, but does not give its exact percentage.

Nutrients of integrity

Cocoa

Cocoa powder contributes chocolate flavour and colour to selected protein formulas.

SourceCocoa powder
FormPowder
Found inCocoa, dark chocolate, cacao nibs

What it is

Cocoa powder is made from processed cacao beans, typically after some of their cocoa butter has been removed. It differs from a finished chocolate bar, which contains its own combination of cocoa ingredients, sugar and other components.

Its role in the formula

Cocoa brings chocolate flavour, colour and some bitterness. A chocolate-flavoured protein powder may therefore combine cocoa with flavourings or sweeteners to balance the taste.

A useful detail

Cocoa powders vary with the beans and processing. The presence of cocoa alone does not establish a standardised flavanol content, a particular caffeine amount or a health benefit in the finished serving.

In VECHÉN

Cocoa appears in Whey Protein Chocolate, Brown Rice Protein Chocolate and Soy Protein + Multivitamins Chocolate. The protein, sugars and other nutrient values belong to the complete recipe. A chocolate flavour should be compared with its own nutrition table rather than assuming it has the same composition as the Vanilla version.

Three distinct types

Steviol glycosides are sweet compounds obtained from stevia leaves. Sucralose is a high-intensity sweetener used in small quantities. Xylitol is a polyol, also called a sugar alcohol; the term does not mean it contains drinking alcohol.

Why formulas differ

High-intensity sweeteners provide sweetness in small amounts, while a polyol can also contribute bulk. Their flavours and behaviour differ, so they are not necessarily interchangeable within a recipe.

Reading the label

The presence of a sweetener does not establish that the complete product is sugar-free or calorie-free. Other ingredients can contribute carbohydrate, sugars or energy. Polyols can cause digestive discomfort or a laxative effect when consumed in excess.

In VECHÉN

Selected protein and collagen powders use steviol glycosides. Liposomal Vitamin D3 + K2 lists xylitol. BCAA 2:1:1 and Electrolytes + Carbs list sucralose. Compare the finished formula and flavour rather than assuming every product uses the same sweetener.
